Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam are pickup markets. The D-Max, Triton, Ranger, Navara and Hilux on those roads are the highest-volume candidates for electric running boards anywhere in the world. They are also the easiest place to lose money on a wrong order — because the model year matters more than the model name.
Why "Ford Ranger" is not enough information
Ford has sold the Ranger in this region across four distinct generations, and the chassis mounting points changed at every one:
| Generation | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ranger T6 | 2015–2019 | Kit › 6-bracket |
| Ranger T7 / T8 | 2020+ | Kit › 6-bracket |
| Ranger T9 | 2023 | Kit › 6-bracket |
| Ranger (China-built) | 2023 | Kit › 6-bracket |
To the eye these trucks look similar. Underneath, the brackets are not interchangeable. Order for "a Ranger" and you have roughly a one-in-four chance of getting it right.
Generation-by-generation fitment: the main regional pickups
Isuzu D-Max — Thailand's second best-seller
| Years | Kit |
|---|---|
| 2015–2020 | D-Max 15-20 › |
| 2021–2024 | D-Max 21-24 › |
Two kits, two generations. The 2021 change was a full model change, not a facelift.
Nissan Navara NP300 — three variants
| Years | Kit |
|---|---|
| 2015–2019 | NP300 15-19 › |
| 2020–2023 | NP300 20-23 › |
| 2024 | NP300 24 › |
Mitsubishi Triton
| Years | Kit |
|---|---|
| 2015+ | Triton 15+ › 6-bracket |
| 2024 | Triton 24 › |
Toyota Hilux
| Generation | Years | Kit |
|---|---|---|
| Vigo | 2008–2016 | Vigo 08-16 › |
| Revo / Rocco | 2015–2023 | Revo / Rocco 15-23 › |
Hilux is the single best-selling vehicle in Thailand. If you stock one running board programme for the region, this is the one that moves.
Mazda BT-50 and Chevrolet Colorado
| Vehicle | Kit |
|---|---|
| Mazda BT-50 2015+ | BT-50 15+ › 6-bracket |
| Chevrolet Colorado 2015+ | Colorado 15+ › |
PPV / SUV on the same platforms
The pickup-based SUVs share the commercial success of their truck siblings and take running boards too:
| Vehicle | Kit |
|---|---|
| Toyota Fortuner 2016–2023 | Fortuner 16-23 › |
| Toyota Fortuner 2024 | Fortuner 24 › |
| Isuzu MU-X 2015–2023 | MU-X 15-23 › |
The 6-bracket question
You will notice "6-bracket" on most of the pickup kits above. This is not marketing. Heavier vehicles and off-road variants use six chassis mounting points instead of four, which spreads the load and resists flex when the board is stepped on at the ends.
A 4-bracket board fitted to a vehicle designed for 6 will flex, rattle over time, and in the worst case crack at the mounting plate. If your supplier cannot tell you how many brackets their kit uses, they have not engineered it for that vehicle.
Five things to confirm before you order
- Exact year range, not just the model name — and the generation code if you know it (T6/T7/T8/T9, NP300).
- Cab configuration — single cab, extended cab and double cab can differ.
- Bracket count — 4 or 6.
- Whether the truck is lifted. A suspension lift changes sill-to-ground geometry and affects retracted clearance and motor angle.
- Whether it has factory side skirts. Some kits are specified "with side skirt" and some "without" — they are not interchangeable.
Climate: what actually fails in this region
Heat and humidity, not cold, are the reliability challenge across Southeast Asia.
- Motor connectors take on moisture. Sealed connectors and dielectric grease are not optional here.
- Mud and grit pack around the hinge pivots on construction and plantation trucks, accelerating wear faster than anything else. Six-monthly cleaning and re-greasing roughly doubles mechanism life.
- Ground clearance under load matters on rural roads — confirm the retracted position before the customer scrapes it on the first speed bump.
